Date: 2005-09-06 05:17 am (UTC)I can't have been the only one who cheered today to learn that the Seabees had arrived... and the Marines had landed, too. :) Lots of good, common-sense points in that post.
I heard something on CNN, I think, though, that was rather confusing... something to the effect that people were asking why hadn't the National Guard been federalized, so they could have taken charge in NO sooner? and the reply was that the governor hadn't allowed it, because if the NG remained under state control, she could issue and they would follow a shoot-to-kill order, which they wouldn't be allowed to do if federalized.
It was a passing comment, and not followed up on, but the whole thing gave me chills and made me scratch my head at the same time.

Date: 2005-09-06 05:36 am (UTC)but dude, shoot to wound isn't bad enough? why haggle over that kind of order---just get the NG in the city. sheesh.
i dunno if i'm going to be able to stomach all the finger-pointing. one week of it has been more than enough.

Date: 2005-09-06 07:50 pm (UTC)Yeah, the guy brings a lot of good points, some are a bit raw even though true... like you I have lotsa opinions floating around, but in the end mine just don't add anything. like anything there is enough fault and to spare, and chastizing politicians for acting the same way they always have, won't change them. The only observation that seems to mean much to me [I'm sure I'm not the only one who thought it] is that when the people in charge worry more how it will look if they prepare and the hurricane MISSES, they will not go full tilt to prepare for when it hits. This is a human attitude, preparing for the future or the unseen must be taught. I still get needled to this day about Y2K prep I did, but "didn't need". My comment is usually, 'what, you WANTED y2k to have been bad?'
