Oct. 17th, 2005 01:27 amso...there's this thing. a discussion. in at least a couple of places. and i was pointed to a post by
but this discussion i can't ignore, and i choose not to walk away from, because, well, she's right.
"...However, more and more young authors are coming into fandom, and fewer and fewer older authors are coming out and saying "RPS is rude and crosses the line." So more and more younger authors are writting it. By sheer dint of the lj echo chamber, RPS is winning that battle..."
so here's me coming out and saying it. i think RPS is rude and crosses the line. i don't want to see it further invade the BSG fandom. i think it's, well, thoroughly disgusting, quite honestly.
i don't care what you do with/to fictional characters because they're fictional. they do not exist and we all know it. you can fic Tigh having wild monkey sex with, well, a monkey, and i wouldn't care. i wouldn't read it, but i wouldn't care. and its existence would in no way disturb me because, hello, not real people.
RPS is an invasion of privacy, the most intimate kind of privacy, and it's wrong. those are real people and their lives are their own and our status as fans buys us nothing.
this is my opinion, and i state my opinion publicly because RPS is happening in my fandom [BSG} and i think it's wrong. absolutely dead wrong.
i'm nobody in the fandom. i work very hard to stay nobody in the fandom. and i expect to sway all of no one's opinion on this because that is not my intent. but it is my fandom, so i will speak my peace. and with that, i go back into my little, tiny, corner.

Date: 2005-10-17 12:29 pm (UTC)I stay out of fic discussions, for the most part, because I don't write it, and I don't read much of it, and if I don't have any skin in the game, it seems inappropriate to butt in.
I do, however, have opinions. And my opinion is that, as you and hossgal say, fictional characters are one thing, and real people are another, and real people deserve a basic level of respect and courtesy.
I think that RPS is inappropriate, and should be discouraged.

Date: 2005-10-17 02:41 pm (UTC)this is public life, this is private life - here's the line in between - fans are only allowed in the public life half of it.... butting into somebody's private life without their permission, no matter who a person is, is an illustration of completely poor psychological boundaries and like you said, wrong! and somebody being famous doesn't all of a sudden exclude them from having a private life.

Date: 2005-10-18 04:23 am (UTC)and "wankery" refers to blow up arguments, usually because someone along the way, either in the original or subsequent posts, said something incredibly silly, or totally lacking in earth logic as we know it.....like, in the Harry Potter fandom, there's a group of fans that think JK Rowling intentionally wrote Ron and Hermoine together specifically to piss of the Harry/Hermoine shippers.
perfectly logically discourse can go "wanktastic" when someone says something dumb. it's rather amusing to watch from a distance.
