Bob Evans, public defender for the town of Prentiss, was warned by town officials not to represent Maye in his appeal. Evans didn't obey, and he got fired . . . by the town. Evans relates that Mayor Charlie Dumas told him that representing Maye was the reason.
you know, I could SWEAR I've read that piece before... that doesn't make it easier... what I've always wondered about these sorts of things, is what kind of surveillance and recon can be done... it always seems like it's the split second that causes the trouble. and then things just accelerate down. I guess that's too science-fictiony for real life, but regardless of the bigotry and the lack of justice, that is being fought about, nothing will make up for the lives, lost and broken... sad.
you *have* to do surveillance and recon because you HAVE to articulate that in the search warrant, right down to a physical description of the house in question. you MUST be able to articulate the activity justifying the warrant.
i can see how under the heat of events bad shit can happen, but where'd the bad guy go? why wasn't he arrested?
Maye may end up owing his freedom to a blogger and a very dedicated attorney. here's hoping.
I was thinkin more situational recon, like there are 5 people in the house this minute, and the two in the other side of the duplex are of interest but not the target... the part about the warrent not naming both parties in there was what seemed sloppiest to me, they new it was a duplex from the get-go...
either there is something way "life is stranger than fiction" deeper going on here... or it's all retaliatory... letting the object get away IS the most troubling to me... he actually DID a crime...

all but the biggest, or richest, depts have the kind of tech and manpower to do that kind of internal intelligence gathering. we don't even always get that kind of info just before the service. we sit on the house for a long time though, documenting traffic and the like.
the duplex thing is immaterial and that's what i can't figure. they are two legally separate residences, with separate LEGAL descriptors for reasons of the search warrant. no one had ANY legal right to kick that door IN TANDEM with the warrant. they could have argued, maybe, exigent circumstances on a fleeing suspect, if the suspect were, you know, actually fleeing and not already in custody.
Fuck. It's a public defender's JOB to defend clients who can't afford their own lawyer. How could they fire him for that? And the whole business with the search warrant and the conveniently absent Mr. Smith smells.
yeah, that whole case is rather stunning. and it's so easy to argue something is racially motivated when one side is one descent and one side is the other, but i don't know that it isn't simply a case of covering up a horrendous error that cost an officer his life. either way, bent or racist, or both, from what i've read it's horribly, horribly wrong.
yeah. even if there's a suspicion that the guy's somewhat guilty, for lack of a better word, how do you explain all the frakking bizarre, and illegal, stuff surrounding it?
there's no way to explain all that bizarre and illegal stuff surrounding it. Especially the fact that they're not even sure if they heard the guy announce himself as a police officer.. AND the firing of the public defender? That's the worst part of it..
you know, like i said to someone else, Jul?, further up, you can't really tell if it's racially motivated or not, rather than simple corruption (or deep, deep stupidity), and you want to *really* hope that it isn't...and yet...
and sadly, this kind of story *used* to be the sort of thing that the msm would pioneer and make their cause celebre. now they're apparently too busy.

But Cheers to the Blogger and the fact that an appeal is on the way.
Sis, Have you been able to find when there might be that appeal? I would so like to keep up with this in order to see him released.
