is there anything better than getting to go in late for work and spending your "morning" watching Star Wars. you know, the *real* Star Wars. sadly, the tapes of the original are tanked and we must resort to red's "special edition" tapes. so, we just ignore the fact that Greedo shot first, find something to do during the ridiculous added scene with Jabba and Han, and have a silly good time channeling Han and Luke. Pasha is, of course, Chewbacca. the personality changes can get a bit tricky if you're not paying attention though. whew. one sloppy shift and your slashing. gack.
ahhh, life is good.
uhm, and dude, i can't believe you were in love with your sister, man.

Date: 2004-08-02 03:39 am (UTC)And talk about Geekdom....
I was all over the latest TV Guide's "25 Greatest Sc-Fi Legends". I'm mean it is awesome that John Crichton & Mal Reynolds made the list. But I was giddy seeing some of my old friends from my childhood (Ultraman, Robot & Uncle Martin) plus other favs like SAm Beckett, Fox Mulder, The Star Trek Crews nd Rod Sterling).
Oh man this brings back memories.

Date: 2004-08-02 08:02 am (UTC)Just wanted to let you know that I'm not talking about you in my most recent entry. You did take one icon that I hadn't posted for sharing, but I like you, so it's cool.
:)

Date: 2004-08-02 08:55 am (UTC)i have to confess, though, to not understanding the whole thing about icons and their use, and that your post kinda hurt my feelings because i made sure to tell you on your lj and tell everyone on my lj and named my icons with you as the maker. i thought that was how icon use worked. i guess i don't have that right still.
the other day, following some links to links to links, i came across an lj that had an FAQ about icons and was really quite mean to perfect strangers and rather belligerent about it all. i left confused and happy not to be in that fandom.
i very much understand that a VAST amount of work goes into making an icon, especially because i have zero design skills. i couldn't make an icon to literally save my life. seriously.
that said, and probably because of the inability, i don't understand how some people get so very upset about the use of an icon they made when the "user" publically says where they got it and who made it, and do not in any way try to pretend that the icon is their creation.

Date: 2004-08-02 09:47 am (UTC)I'm sorry I hurt your feelings. You did tell me that you were taking icons. I'd noticed then that you took one that I didn't have up for public sharing and I didn't say anything just because I *didn't* want to hurt your feelings. And because you'd told me, and because we'd "talked" via comments before, it didn't really bother me.
Someone else took an icon I'd made specifically for myself and didn't ask me, didn't even tell me (s)he was taking it.
And that irked me because I'd make the icon for *me*. Basically, there are two different kinds of icons I make. I either make them for the world, or I make them for just myself. The ones I make just for me I tend to think of as something that represents me more. or sometimes if I'm just really proud of something, I'll like to keep it to myself for a while.
Not all icon makers do that. I dunno, maybe I'm just extremely possessive.
Anyway, apologies for the hurt feelings.

Date: 2004-08-02 11:43 am (UTC)i'm sure it's [the lack of understanding it] because i can't make them myself so the fuss of it isn't something that i can personally relate to. and i wasn't referencing you in my reply. i'd seen that across several fandoms and on multiple lj's. whole wars about the use of other people's icons. it's just something that puzzles me. i knew i could ask you about it because you make icons and post them for people to use, so that makes you my local expert.;)
it reminds me of a giant fight that happened in the LFN world regarding fic. some wingnut was taking other people's fic and posted it as their own. HUGE uproar. i watched from the sidelines amused because i see that stuff a whole lot different than the average fic writer, i think.
the characters from television, film and books in fandom fic do not belong to the fic writers.
DO. NOT.
there is no arguing that. don't care how you slice it, dice it or try to qualify it or justify it. you're intellectually ripping someone else off. true, it's an homage because the world that was created was so incredible that you wish to play in it, but at the heart of it, that's still character theft.
to then bitch because someone took a story you wrote, when that story is about characters whom you are writing about that you didn't create and you don't have permission to use just baffles the hell out of me.
original fic? kick ass and take names later. i'll hold 'em down for ya. fan fic? pot, meet kettle.
