We ARE still talking about the Harry Potter Hit Parade meltdown, right? Because I can't think of anything else that could provoke such an awed, semi-gleeful, semi-creeped-out reaction. Unless it were a REAL black hole. In which case I think you'd have to have X-ray vision like Superman in order to actually see anything but yeah, it would be pretty cool to watch, in a sad way.
oh yeah, but there's no glee in my reaction. it's all awe and TOTALLY creeped out.
i know what being on the receiving end of lies in fandom feels like, not to that depth by any stretch, but i know what it feels like. and while many of the players sowed plenty of their own bad karma seeds, what she did was loathsome, and how the fandom turned it's back on Gryffyndor Tower is horrifyingly hateful...and my heart aches a bit for them all.
Yeah, I have to admit that I started out semi-gleeful. I didn't know any of the parties involved, and the whole business was just so incredibly bizarre that it was hard to take seriously. But having continued to follow it, it's obvious that real people got genuinely hurt as a result of this desire for attention. And real people are still getting genuinely hurt, and it's reached the point where it's no longer funny absurd but sad absurd.
It's kind of scary, though, because the truth is that it's pretty easy for people to adjust their perception of reality to suit their preconceived ideas about something, and it makes me wonder if I've been guilty of it in the past. Because honestly, looking back, there have been times when people on my flist have been accused of doing something bad (nowhere near this level, obviously), and I've approached it much more skeptically than I would've if the person accused was a stranger or someone I knew but didn't like. Things can get clique-y even when you think you're being objective.
I was going to say "you can't make this shit up," but if I'm understanding the gist of it all, somebody did, and a whole lotta people are riled up as a result.
Or I could be missing the point, which doesn't negate the "whole lotta people are riled up" part.
Sooo happy to be in my own little corner of the 'verse, oblivious to the sturm and drang...
and it continues to be an implosion because Heidi keeps making statements like this:
I think that going onto someone's LJ and questioning their health-related claims when they have documentation on a website to support their claims is usually questionable, but there are some circumstances where it would be justifiable; this was not one of them.
"usually questionable"? that woman is dying of cancer, and her family is bankrupt because of the bills, and Heidi calls open mockery on that woman's own website, and repeated statements, however in jest, for that woman to just die already, "usually questionable"?????? what.the.fuck.
msscribe probed and analyzed the weaknesses already present in the fandom and then through a wickedly cunning use of sock puppets, she played the fandom like a fiddle, all to bring herself to the top of pile.
along the way, a few someone's started taking notes because right off the bat it looked fishy to them and then the one person posted the analysis...and then the fandom started to implode upon itself as the true victims were vindicated, and the collaborators, in the standingbyanddoingnothing sense of the world were revealed, and then one of them started throwing people under the train.
it's simply stunning.
and yeah, i'm unbelievably happy that it wasn't my fandom.
I didn't quite understand what was going on in the Harry Potter fandom, not being up on all of it but I went to Gryffindor Castle and there was a place where hate mail could be read. So of course I visited:
Hello Mr. Emerson, You are going to hell for your satanistic rituals. You might be sexy but that is no reason to defy GOD. I will laugh at you when you are down in hell eating pineapples and I in up in heaven being sexy.
Wow! I'm sexy and I get free pineapples! How cool is that??
Me again. What has eating pineapples got to do with hell? Some may think that is heaven!
