what has surprised me about general reaction to all this is the surprise on all sides. Everybody seems surprised that when you poke Israel they come back armed to the teeth. That Hizbollah doesn't care about the Lebanese people at all, but is interested in  what is it they want today? They started this, did they do all this for a prisoner swap? That the French are going to disdain military action, and look at it through the lens of 'the poor oppressed people must be right'. Exactly who are the oppressed here? France doesn't mention that. But it really irks me that when talking about France everyone trots out every weakness they have ever shown, as if we are somehow morally superior to them. I don't agree with Chirac's stance, but I'm not surprised by it. I would have been surprised if it wasn't that. The US comes out on Israel's side. Um, not surprising.
So if everyone knows how this is going to work, and everyone has the same opinion as ever, why the surprise? Poke a badger, and they come out with their claws extended. I don't know what hizbollah wanted here. But to my cynical eye they did this to get Israel to retaliate in such a way that it would destabilize the govt of Lebanon so that Syria would be able to dominate it again. It's too bad that Israel couldn't have done a covert action to get their guys back, because Hizbollah was banking on this massive retaliation. Doing the unexpected would have kept everyone off balance... I wonder what any of the europeans would do if suddenly the UN was to decide to not accept their existence as a country, and promote other elements to come in and take over their land... I'll bet that thought never occurred to Chirac... No easy answers.

i wondered about that as well, given Mossad's bad ass brilliance, so i'll go with one of two options; either they didn't have enough intel as to location, which is a likely scenario, or Israel was beyond sick of their bullshit, which is also a likely scenario. like i told svillericrecs on a thread at her place, and you mention here, Hezbollah picked this fight on purpose because they *knew* how Israel would react. frankly, i can't blame Israel. that whole we're gonna wipe you off the face of the planet song and dance has got to get old after a while. how long are they supposed to tolerate that? why is it that Jewish racism is acceptable globally? that nuts me up almost to a point of irrational and i'm not even Jewish.

well, no, because they're France. they, and the rest of the world, all come from the position that they have a divine right to exist. and i'm not saying that in a way the implies that we don't believe essentially the same thing, simply that we also recognize that other folks do as well.
