eta: for a couple of typos and a clarification of thought.

for a bit now, there's been this one sided, all cloaked, and supposedly secret, pot shot fest goin' on. really, whatever. i mean, if that's what's fun for you that's groovy, honestly. everybody's entitled to their feelings.

i bring it up because it resurrects a misconception, and a projected expectation, that has been around for, oh, i dunno, 4 years now? more or less. that misconception had always both confused and irritated the holy fuck out of me, and now that it seems to have infested moved to livejournal, i thought i'd throw this out there one more time, reading comprehension skills and memories being what they are occasionally.

first, i'd like to borrow from a brilliant metaphor that boofadil came up with. i hope she doesn't mind that i use it here because the point is really elegantly made.

lj is an individual place that everyone can see...kinda like high rise apartments that have some windows open and some closed. you can choose what's exposed and, yeah, it's all the same building but the individual apartments are owned or rented by individual people and therefore belong to them.

boards? are someone's house. there's different rooms, where you can sneak around or there's the great room where you can address a bunch o' folks, but it's still someone's house and you have to abide by their rules, keeping in mind that because they invited all these people, they have to try to avoid offending or really pissing off as many people as possible. or not. they could kick everyone out, or just have a few friends over, etc, etc...

the point is, lj and boards? not the same thing.

i've only got two other things to add.

first, you know what happens when you keep turning the other cheek? people keep slugging you there. you do, contrary to that aforementioned misconception, have a right to think it hurts and pummel them back stop doing that.

and second? the war's long done campaign's over. we're all just folk now. do everyone, including yourselves, a favor and move the frak on. but if for some reason you simply can't, then you don't get to be surprised, or to claim a moral high ground, when the grenades get thrown back.

ditto. i was taught that you slug 'em, ie; engage the Bully Defense, and then the turning the other cheek part is the blowing it off and going back to square part.
