While I definitely think a lot of folks are way over thinking it, I have to go with a live and let live mind set when it comes to meta.
Some people really enjoy it and it enhances their viewing pleasure. Others hate it and see it as a negative thing. I personally like it for some shows and not for others. *shrug*
The fact is, it does matter to some folks, and I say more power to them because I totally have the option of reading the meta or skipping it.
Is the lack of women a problem for me? Hell no. In fact, for me, it's probably a plus. Having a season of a show where it was mostly about guys, and guys who are totally GUYS at that gave me a happy like no one's business. But I get that others aren't so keen on that, and depending on their personality, they enjoy analyzing why that is and how it affects things and blah, blah, blah. More power to them, but I'll be sitting over here enjoying my show, yo. *g*
i have no answer to that question other than it probably has something to do with not being able to relate, to which i say, there's twelve billion other shows out there for you to watch, if this ain't your cuppa, no harm, no foul.
*is silly and sheepish. also flipping you off in my head for good measure.*
A show about specific guys, not a problem. A show examining guyness, fine (anyway, good for a laugh). A show where, if you got ovaries, you have to die, be evil, or be helpless in the face of danger? Kind of strange and offputting.
Like coffeeandink said, the smart-and-tough female cop in the cannibals episode was reassuring: at least it's probably not on purpose. Writing a universe that just randomly forgets to include women is pretty dumb, like forgetting that you have a left hand; but a universe that actively tries to make women into objects (of pity or scorn, worship or hatred) -- that's downright objectionable. I think Supernatural is the former, rather than the latter. Anyway, I hope so.
i guess i just don't see it as an either/or...in that i don't see it as the former, and i certainly don't see it as the latter.
and again, it's not any critique of the discussion that was occurring, in an "ohmigod that's so wanktastic" sort of way, because all players were really well spoken and respectful and all. it's just puzzling to me in a "does every show have to be X or Y" in order for it be, i dunno, valid or legit or worthy...or something?
Well, I like the TV to at least make a passing nod to the real world. If I had actually watched Friends, I would have been all, "You live in New York: why is everybody a white native English speaker??"
I have a very active bullshit-meter like that. Calling bullshit on, e.g., the ability to shoot 8 bullets out of a sixgun is just funny; calling bullshit on the "accidental" deletion of a sizable portion of the human race, less funny.

Not wanky enough! Damn. I've enjoyed the conversation, although I think it comes to a point where the parties all go to their separate walls and beat their heads against the brick for a while. And, all major parties being non-wanky, that's happened quietly.
Although I look forward to the day I am able to enforce my feminist re-education plan upon the masses. Someday, when I rule the earth --!
someone in there pointed out that the Winchester men are all strongly formed by the missing women in their life, something i strongly agree with. ultimately for me, if i'm entertained and nothing screams out at me, then i'm happy. an absence of women - from a feminist perspective - does not in any way bother me because that exists in the world, and they're telling good stories to me.
Not wanky enough! Damn.
stupid internets not being entertaining.
