you could start with the Arabian Horse Association's website and go from there. http://www.arabianhorses.org/default2.asp

good luck!

Do one? You mean make one? You can purchase them, although they tend to be $$. Um...lemme look up some sources.

yeah, make one...i think. not sure, though. it's one of my co-workers and she originally asked if i had a costume designer connection, to which i said, nooooooo, but i do have a whole slew of smart fandom people.

one of my horsey friends was big in the Arab world a few years back before her baby... LMK if you want me to ask her.

you can also check out eBay, under horse tack, Arab costume. :)

and, umm. there are many different styles of "native" Arab costumes. there's Hollywood style, which most people think of first, but then there's more authentic-y Bedouin-like Syrian costumes too.

lemme find you pics.

oh, i should also maybe mention that i have a man's sheikh costume & both married and unmarried ladies' costumes (black robes, hand-embroidered, headdresses & veils, etc) from when my grandparents took my 13-year-old mother to visit the holy land.

the ladies' skirts aren't flowing enough to ride in, and the man's robes would be worn over trousers, but they might give an idea. anyway, if you think your co-worker is trustworthy, i would be happy to lend them to her if they would help with pattern-making, etc. :)

Yeah, serious money. But to get some ideas there's here: ArabHorseStore.com, Arabian Tack, and Native Arabians. I'd imagine anyone who's good with a sewing machine could replicate the saddle trappings and rider's outfit, though the halter and breastcollar you might have to order unless you're really good with leather.

Kinda makes me glad that Tristan's native dress is nekkid. :D

nekkid!? lol
I looked up a site the other day, but I can't find it now. They had *original*original costumes, and the prices were about $2500. That ended my whim on getting James one just because he'd look cute in in. Er, handsome, I meant handsome.

Well, you know, maybe some war paint, a strip of rawhide through his mouth. Hooray for more than slightly crazy mustangs who used to be Indian ponies!

Check out the sites I liked to - they have saddle sets for about $500, which is cheap as far as I'm concerned. (She says, who needs a new dressage saddle and wants a Stubben or a Passier, owwwwwww.) You can still dress him up! And it will be better than Tris's hot pink saddle pad, so he can commiserate with James about that. *g*

Cool, indian ponies. :D James is a prince of the desert. *rolls eyes quietly* lol
What dressage saddle do you have now? I got a Devocoux about 2 years ago, and LOVE IT, LOVE IT.
How long have you been riding dressage? And how did you get your horse?

I've got an old old old English dressage saddle - the make is JF Robertson, if that means anything to you? I haven't found anything out about them, and I LOVE the saddle. It's a caramel brown, no knee rolls, no thigh blocks, and even more close contact than my AP saddle - basically, leather and a tree. Unfortunately Tristan's back has changed so much in the last few months that I discovered last week it makes him very sore and cranky to wear, so. Alas. I await the saddle-fitter's next visit to see if anything can be done.

I'm just stuck on the Passier brand general, my AP is an old Passier and I adore it beyond measure. But Stubben makes a saddle called the Tristan, and, well...yeah. I'm shallow. *g* Eh, we'll see, I'll probably try out many many used saddles and end up with what works best for both of us.

I've been riding dressage for about two years now. I did hunters growing up and for a year in France in college. I got Tris...hmmm...he's an eleven year old mustang, wild until he was four, adopted at the age of five to a farm in New York. He was then at the very least severely neglected for the next five years, possibly abused, eventually seized by the state and sent to a rescue in Maine, where I met him when I was working there the summmer after college. He was given to me as a training project because he was scheduled to be adopted by someone as a pasture ornament (he is a very, very striking bay roan, as you can see in the icon), but that fell through and I fell in love. He came to me January 2 just barely knowing how to lead. (Most of my work the summer before had been getting him to trust me enough not to bolt if I looked at him. I'd ridden him in a sidepull and old Wintec 4-5 times at the walk, because he's a sweetheart when he wants to be, but nothing that can actually be called training.)

Although I think my strictly dressage career will be a short-lived one, as we started Tristan over fences about two weeks ago and he LOVES IT. So I'm currently considering a second career as an eventer. I'm going to diiiiiiiie.

lol There is the old saying about eventers. lol Sounds like fun, though, if you do it. I prefer to stay nearer the ground. ;) Except when we're doing airs, of course. *snorts*
That is so great that you fell in love! That is the best way to find a riding partner, even if they're 'difficult.' And he is very beautiful. I wish you two a long and happy partnership.
And that's really cool that you got to go to France in college.

My horse wasn't exactly abused, but when I got him he wasn't exactly being trained with classical dressage methods (that's the nice version), and it was obvious he was not handling it well. *hugs him on principle* We've had an interesting and hard road, but it's been so worth it.
BTW, growing up, I was generally trail riding, and being wild. I think we hand hunter lessons two or three times, but we generally lived in the middle of nowhere, so really only did 4-H.

I've got some old contacts, as we used to breed Arabians. Might know people with old costumes for sale or be able to point you in the right direction.

I *think* there's an online classified, too, which would have costumes for sale at lower cost.

Lemme know what you need and I'll look 'round.

Did a quick Google search and that's the first few. I like the third site. I can put out feelers locally, too, as Scottsdale is a major Arabian hub, but I need to know more about what she wants and how serious she is.
