Jon Favreau is directing Iron Man for Marvel, scheduled to go into production "early 2007".

an interesting choice for an interesting property.

in other "stuff what's in production" news:

The Bourne Ultimatum is scheduled to start "Oct 1st", Paul Greengrass directing.

and Logan's Run, with Bryan Singer directing, is scheduled to shoot in "fall 2006".

and in the possibly strangest mix of project and director, The Wachowskis are directing Speed Racer.

i don't know whether to be horrified or intrigued.

got a director or project you're interested in? ask and i'll look it up for ya.

info from the print version of Below The Line magazine.

I'm diggint the Jason Bourne series, so thanks for that info.

Not sure how I feel about Speed Racer.

But how about the new Thomas Crown flick with Pierce Brosnan? I'm blanking on who is supposedly directing, if anyone yet.

there's a new TC? must go check. Brosnan's directing something through his production company Irish Dream Time (i think that's it's name), but i didn't see a TC listing. Verhoven directed the original so i wonder if he's doing the sequel. i'll check and let ya know.

Is the director for the Bourne Ultimatum the same as either of the previous films? I had a bit of a problem with the "frenzy cam" in the last one; gave me a headache. Heard the same from others.

Greengrass is indeed the same Mr. Frenzycam. It's a bit easier to see on a TV thana big screen (I'm only blinded by it, not made nauseated like some), but, yeah.

My thing is, Logan's Run?? Have you SEEN that movie? It is the most hilariously ridiculous piece of silly claptrap since Soylent Green!

Oh, say Soylent Green is being remade! Say it's so!!

Thanks for the advice about watching Bourne Supremacy on the TV. I really enjoy this series but when I saw it in theaters, it did make me feel sick. Maybe if I had sat at the very back it wouldn't have been quite so bad. I'll have to rent Logan's Run; I can always use a good laugh.

i loved Logan's Run. still do. yeah some of it doesn't stand up to time but the storytelling is brilliantly creepy.

it's the same dp, Oliver Wood. the reason why the shaky!cam was so much worse in Supremacy than in Identity is because the director of the first film, Doug Liman, came from an indie cinematographer backround and likes to camera operate. he also, i think, used the "effect" to the right degree. his shooting his own footage drove Wood batshit apparently, triggering nice little blowups on set. Greengrass, otoh, directed the second, and is directing the third.

loved Soylent Green as well. along with The Omega Man and The Illustrated Man. i loved the post-apocalyptic stories from the early 70s.

that was his cinematographer. i'll have to double check if Ultimatum will have the same dp.

What's a dp? I know nothing about the behind the camera working on set. Wouldn't the director say how the film was to be filmed and the cinemtographer do it that way?

sorry...dp is director of photog, which is also a cinematographer. dp is just easier to use, and what most people call cinematographers.

on a given project there's pretty much a triumvirate of structure, at least in pre production; the director, the dp and the production designer. when they all figure out what they want and how to make that happen, then it moves to the shot list, which is a scene by scene breakdown of how many setups it will take to shoot a scene. a set up refers to a camera position, so, for example, a typical scene might have an establishing master shot of the area the scene takes place in, (Moya's bridge with John and Aeryn and D'argo in play), then a medium closeup of Aeryn and John arguing, then one of D'argo and John, and then stuff that's called "coverage"; which are the close up reaction shots for the dialogue that they just shot. soooooooooooo, JUST ONE SCENE can require 6 or 7 set ups to get enough coverage for the director, dp and editor to be happy.

the shot list will include the art dept's input as well, because a given camera angle could drastically effect how a set is prepped.

once *that's* done, and everybody's groovy by it, and you actually move from pre-production to production, ie: principal photography, *then* it shifts to the director for the most part...BUT, the whole reason that the cinematographer's other title says DIRECTOR of photography, is because the guy has a lot of input as well. and when you have a situation where a guy like Doug Liman, who likes to operate the camera himself, HAS to have a dp, then you can have an automatic conflict. Oliver Wood's point was pretty much, "well if you're shooting then why am i here?"...and it's not an invalid point.

the director is responsible for the cohesion of the whole story, but he can't put that whole story together without key dept heads that are responsible for the cohesion of their aspect of the story. one could make a valid argument that the dp is almost more crucial than the director, which is prolly another reason why the title is DIRECTOR of photography.

too much?

too much?

Not at all. I have enormous respect for a group of people who can work together well enough long enough to produce movies like LOTR. I also understand that egos and personalities can get in the way, too.

it's truly amazing that even the worst projects gel and get made, and more so that some even find an audience. the mix is so hit and miss and magic that it works as much as it does.
