too bad the press isn't actually, you know, reporting, that the economy is doing so well.

but they do think it's apparently cool to show US soldiers getting killed by snipers.

“Whether or not you agree with us in this case, our goal, as always, is to present the unvarnished truth as best we can,” wrote CNN producer David Doss in a blog entry about the taped footage, which was still available on CNN.com last night.

except for the part where you AREN'T actually reporting the WHOLE unvarnished truth. i bet David still thinks the US lost the Tet Offensive.

CNN said it obtained the video through contacts with the Islamic Army of Iraq, a Sunni-led insurgent group that has carried out numerous suicide bombings and kidnappings.

CNN would be better able to talk about its stated goal, that one about the so-called "unvarnished truth" if it threw an "Al" in front of its name.

I don't need to see snipers kill American soldiers to keep informed on the war. I did think that one vid of the soldier wearing body armour get knocked down was ok because he got back up and ran around his vehicle and could be interviewed later. I should have had him buy me a lottery ticket that day.

As much as I go to CNN for most of my international news (and BBC for a different slant), I won't watch actual footage of killings. I could rent Faces of Death, if I wanted to see that shit.

well the first example you gave is one thing. i mean if you're just out there shooting footage of the war as it's happening, that's news. but they specifically took sniper footage from the enemy and then ran it. a really good lawyer could make a case for Aid and Comfort.

If I remember right, the footage of the soldier being shot and then getting up was also confiscated footage. After they chased down and killed or captured the snipers, the US found they (the Iraqis) had taped themselves doing it. You could hear them repeating "Allah akbar" over and over. I'm guessing news services thought it was ok to show because the soldier lived and was able to be interviewed afterward. I think he captured the guy who actually shot him later in the day.

I agree with you wholeheartedly about the aiding and and giving comfort part.

As a sort of side bar: a group called VetsVote or something similiar is running a local ad for the dem. politician showing a returned solder shooting two mannekins with a weapon likely to be used by Iraqi snipers (sorry I can't remember what it is). One mannekin is wearing the body armour issued to US troops. The other is wearing a newer type which the Rep. candidate voted against buying & supplying the troops. The cheaper one let the bullets through; the more expensive one did not. There is so much mud-slinging in our state senate race, I don't listen to either one. But what could be an acceptable excuse for not supplying the best body armour available? Sometimes their parents buy it for them. I know it's hot and cumbersome but still. If the soldiers don't want it, that's one thing, I guess.

i can't speak to the armour thing because i don't know first hand, or from actually, you know, reliable first hand sources, what's true.

You're not running on Dutch, it's true. That body armor is wonderful! There are families here who fundraise to buy it and send it to the hawaii troops there, and the guys are saying that they rotate out that armor so everyone is covered. Somewhat. At least they don't try to wear 2 vests at once, which is what some are doing.

fucking CNN, they're still the al queida network. FOX is worse.
