I was confounded when I read this earlier... and then I started on a big rant... and then I relized that less is more. as you already seem to know by just linking... ;)
well, yeah, a piece of the overall rant was about how some muslim reactions are so out of phase to the way americans react, that we're talking apples and... um... rock, how's that for a comparison...
so the short is a couple of Saudis hire an Indonesian Cleaning lady, take her passport so she cant leave, refuse to pay her, and the Husband rapes her repeatedly.
for 4 years.
Eventually he is brought to justice 27-life... and the Colorado Atty Gen goes to Saudi Arabia, to explain to the king, that we don't allow slavery and rape here.
The King and the Husband's family reaction? she must be lying. Husbands reaction is that this is a common practice in his culture.
um, yeah, well when you moved to the US, you said you would observe our laws, EVEN if they are stricter than your culture.
Regardless of what this guy did or didn't do, the point is that he really doesn't care what our laws are, because his laws are his religion, so to him they supersede ours. This is somewhat different than the idea that the laws of the place are the minimum, and if your religion is STRICTER than that, you follow your religion. IMHO this is why some parts of muslim society, don't integrate with places they move, and never will.
If a person like Nonie could help bridge the gaps in understanding, then new behaviors are possible, and foreward is possible... but we need to know what we are looking at. otherwise we smile uncomprehendingly, shaking hands with people who smile but hate us...

God is God and Country is Country and God is yours but Country is Ours and keep your God the fuck out of our Country, thankyouverymuch, PRECISELY because everybody has the right to worship or not as they choose because that's not what runs this country.
