I think that they may have handled the situation just right. The 'protesters' went there spoiling for a fight. They wanted to become martyrs for their cause and if there had been arrests, especially if there was any hint of police butality, they would have gotten exactly what they wanted.

By just letting them do their damage and then calmly cleaning up afterwards, the protesters come off as idiots and petty vandels. Nobody is on their side.

i'm sorry but that's horsehockey. they have a right to free speech. that's it. vandalism is NOT free speech. and if they went spoiling for a fight, then they weren't interested in exercising their right to free speech and they deserved to go to jail.

I never said that they were in the right on this, far from it. Obviously they were breaking the law and officials would have been well within their rights to have them arrested and prosecuted. No arguement there.

But.

The way I read the story, they were hopeing to turn this into a huge, ongoing media event, ideally being portrayed as some sort martyrs and inspiring other groups to stage similar stunts. As it is, everyone I've talked to, including some die-hard democrat doves think that they're just a bunch of idiotic vandals. If they (or any like-minded group) is stupid enough to try to do it again, I imagine that they will get arrested and nobody will blink.

the precedent has already been set that vandalizing the Capitol building is acceptable behavior.

ugh, anarchists are the worst of all no win situations... I'd personally never go with the appeasement route. They tend to make you pay, by being more agressive next time. At the least all of their cowardly butts should have been thrown in jail after for defacing public property...

>>>Approximately 300 protesters were allowed to take the steps and began to spray paint "anarchist symbols" and phrase such as "Our capitol building" and "you can’t stop us" around the area, the source said.<<<

yeah kids? It's MY capitol building too, and you owe me money for the cleanup... should have been arrested and sentanced to a work detail cleaning graffiti in the DC area.

AND? I'll give voice to the dark thought. What would have occured if one of those punk had not a full spray can, but a spray can full of nails and C-4? It's a fine line between quashing the right to assemble, the right to voice opinion, and opening yourself to baldfaced, pointless violence. A line that can be traversed very easily...

I don't know if this is the incident in question, but when I ran across this in liberal-blog-land, I was reminded of your post.

interesting that they're spinning it and blaming the religious right because my source was the newspaper the covers Congress.
