Depends on tone and intention. If it's just a historical footnote, not a problem, but if it's coming from someone who, eg, has tried in the past to "enlighten" non-Christians in his department, I'd be a little more worried.

Actually, right after 9/11, my department head sent out a blanket email to students, faculty and staff that kinda boiled down to "Well now we all know how Israel feels, don't we?". It wasn't exactly those words, but the sentiment was there, at least to me. It's hard to judge tone and stuff through email. Many of the faculty (and most of the senior faculty) are Jewish. I wonder if he would have sent that email out, with that message, if most of the faculty *hadn't* been Jewish, or if there had been even a single Arab student in the department at the time. And if it wouldn't be appropriate in that case, seems to me it wasn't appropriate then, either. Doesn't matter whether I agreed with him or not.

'Course, I didn't say anything about it either, just let it slide and kinda lowered my opinion of him a bit.

I guess I'm just saying, vastly different things, what this guy's relationship is to the people he's sending this out to, if this guy is sending this out to be deliberately hostile and confrontational, or if he's just sending it out as an interesting footnote to history that he found.
