I think I'd speculated early on, because of Peter's visions, that maybe Peter was seeing through Ted's eyes, and that Nathan would sacrifice himself to fly Ted away.
Later, I wondered if Sylar would absorb Ted's powers, and then Peter would use Nathan's flying ability and Claire's healing to get him high up out of the city, yet survive. (Although surviving a bomb blast, much less a nuclear bomb blast, seems far-fetched.)
But Nathan flying Peter away is even better, dramatically.
One thing I thought of today is that if Peter ceases using his abilities when unconscious, then surely a knock on the head or a gunshot would be enough to stop him blowing up? I had this brief image flash up of Claire cold-cocking him, and then the group (the ones that were mobile) gathering 'round and saying, "This is it? We saved the world by knocking him out?", and then breaking into smiles or laughter. That would have been an anti-climax that'd knock me back in my chair. *g*

i missed a few eps in the middle, so i'm not positive about this, but i thought that the reason why Ted - and thus Peter - can survive is because whatever that reaction is (fusion or fission), it goes outward from them, not encompassing them. the only trick then would be Nathan, but since they've already established that he can fly at mach speeds, i didn't really find it a stretch for Nathan to whisk his brother up to the ionosphere and then split.

Well, when Peter starts losing control in the alley after Claire is taken by Ma Petrelli, his hands start glowing, he panics, and then he passes out. And his hands stop glowing.
So, clocking him upside the head seems like a reasonable method to stop him exploding.
i think they stopped glowing not because he was unconscious, but by being unconscious he stopped panicking; and they already established that he couldn't control his powers when he couldn't concentrate properly. that's what the subplot with Claude was for, that whole teaching Peter how to focus thing, yes?
that said, the clocking him over the head scenario is pretty damned funny.
