ahhhh, fandom
Jun. 14th, 2007 08:18 pmlink leads to a discussion about possible spoilers for S3 of SPN...maybe...because it depends on if you consider casting sides as DecisionsSetInStone or not.
if you do, then really, don't click the link.
The Entitlement Debates; v.AdInfinitum.
there's lots of panic, but plenty of reasonable discussion as well.
the question, which i don't know the Answer to - versus, you know, my personal opinion, or if there even *is* an answer - is where the line is between providing valid feedback to a show from its fans, and demanding directions be taken, or not, before episodes are even filmed.
which action is a legitimate part of the interaction - i hesitate to use the word contract - between viewer and creator, and which is the unrealistic expectation of fandom entitlement?
season one of Alias is always a good example to me of the former, with regards to Will's character. he wasn't really doing anything for a LOT of fans, and JJ saw that and added depth to the character, but that was AFTER fans had actually watched the eps.
i personally thinks it's pretty much selfish nonsense that fans are bitching because they don't wantcoodies GIRLS as regulars. well, wtf? how do you know you won't like the characters yet? you haven't even seen them! they haven't even been cast yet, ffs.
yes, based on initial rumors on teh internets, it does look like network interference and not what Kripke had originally planned, but yanno what? the net's payin for the show, and they didn't have to renew it, and you have no idea how Kripke's going to write them.
SPN did the "we've got to find Dad" quest. it fueled the first season beautifully. and they did the "Dean might have to kill Sam if he goes Demon" quest in the second season. they can't do those again.
they've left the question of demon!Sam up in the air, and they added released demons from Hell into the mix, both giving them something to do next season. why wouldn't that include another demon hunter? and why couldn't that hunter be a she? and why couldn't she be better than both Dean and Sam? they aren't the CenterOfTheUniverse, ffs. yes, there's the very valid point that the JJ's are the leads, but there's also the fact that your heroes are only as good as their foils. if no one's as good, or better, than them, your heroes are pretty much lame.
ask Veronica Mars about how failing to keep a show fresh worked out for them.
also, i seem to recall in the first season - i don't know about the second because i ignored commentary liek whoa - there was a LOT of moaning and groaning about not enough kickass chicks in the show. so now there might be chicks in the show, that actually sound kinda kickass maybe, and fans are bitching about it? pick a side there, people.

Date: 2007-06-19 08:44 pm (UTC)The folks who are bitching about the GIRL COOTIES EWWW! are pretty much by definition not the people who wanted to see more women as agents instead of victims during season 1. Some of the folks who are bitching now are the ones who hated Jo since before she was brought on board, and some of them even hate Ellen and Missouri. @@
Anyway, to my mind, change is good. (Ob Farscape quote.)
