1. do0d. you? are a moron. go live in like, Venezuela or something.

or Cuba. i understand their health care's nice.

2. and speaking of California. here's reason #7,845,932 why Southern California considers Northern California a whole 'nuther planet.

not that the entire article is about laws passed only in NoCal, mind. the thrust of it's nanny stateism.

"...Before long, you look back and realize that you have given up a lot of your freedoms merely by acquiescing to others’ beliefs on how you should live your life.”

yes, this. it's the reason in a nutshell why i've been a registered Republican all of my life - which isn't to say that there aren't Repubs that want bigger gov't, but that's not me, so let's not start that tangent - government should equal smallest.size.possible. and nanny stateism is the antithesis of that.

3. now this? this is what you'd call ironic. /pirate :::laughs:::

4. so is this, for that matter, but there's nothing funny about it.

5. and i almost forgot! NIFONG GETS DISBARRED!!!!!!!

But speaking as a Northern Californian, there is still a big difference between what Berkeley & San Francisco think & what the rest of the Central Valley & Sacramento Valley & northward think. ;)

(Although I have to say with hindsight, having grown up with two smoking parents - I'm all for personal freedoms, but a kid is a captive audience, and I think back on all the secondhand smoke I was exposed to and would never, EVER think of doing the same to any child of mine. So I'm inclined to not get riled by the no-smoking-in-cars law; heck, technically people aren't supposed to use their cell phones while driving - I don't really see a difference.)

absolutely true.

i'm not inclined to get riled about smoking with minors in cars either, but the point's still valid...where do you draw the line? and who gets control of the pen?

That last one about language is striking. Arnold Schwarzenegger is a living example of successful immigration, integration and personal/political achievement, and he's naive? *shakes head*

But yet, when they come into the hospital, after having lived here for years, and years, they are often upset, even angry and indignant, when a nurse doesn't speak Spanish.

To be fair, I have a very basic hospital Spanish vocabulary (I live in Houston.) And I have been fortunate in that I can communicate on a very, very basic level. I have also been fortunate that when Mom or Dad (the patient) can't communicate, there is usually a family member at the bedside to translate.

However, I have been reading the various nursing BBs and blogs and know that this is a big problem. That people often get very angry and demand to be facilitated with a (very expensive) translator, just for starters. We (hospitals) have all forms in English and Spanish. I notice that many products, such as mainstream magazines, shampoos, etc, etc, are labelled in English and Spanish.

Why should they learn English? Because they moved here years ago? Pshaw! I haven't moved to a Spanish speaking country, yet I have been forced to learn their language.

We graduate people from high school all the time who can't. even.read. Why bother to learn the language at all.

I work with a Herzogovanian (probably mis-spelled) immigrant at the hospital. She learned English, as did her husband. She plans to take Spanish so she can be a better nurse.

I absolutely endorse immigrants holding onto their heritage, embracing it and passing it on to their children. We should all take pride in where we come from. It makes us better people and enriches the culture of our society. But you came to an English-speaking country. Expend a little effort.

I work with nurses who have immigrated from Nigeria, China, Mexico, Korea, Egypt, and more. They have all learned English in order to be successful in this society.

My two cents, a little rambly.
