Jun. 18th, 2007 05:38 pmyou have got to be fucking kidding me.
[emphasis mine.]
no wonder California's ranked down by the bottom of the country in terms of education. some of its educators are utter morons.
A fifth-grade promotion ceremony in Rancho Palos Verdes turned into a free-speech battleground Thursday, when students were asked to remove weapons from toys that had been placed on mortarboard caps because of the school's zero-tolerance policy for weapons on campus.

h/t to Dr. Helen...
Though the subjects are totally different, it's amazing to me just what rule they will put in place to make sure that NOBODY makes a frelling decision... not a teacher, not administration, not parent, and certainly NOT THE CHILD.
had to laugh about the kid who wrapped the little stumps in gauze and painted blood on them. I'm sure he has no idea just how right he is about what is being wounded here. It isn't free speech per se. It's the ability to think for yourself, IMHO...

Date: 2007-06-19 02:19 am (UTC)In the article you cite, I was especially blown away by this justification: "Counselors have heard from girls who are uncomfortable hugging boys but embarrassed to tell anyone". Unwanted physical contact isn't a problem that's going to go away once they leave middle school. It would serve the abovementioned girls far better to teach them to deliver a firm 'No' and that people who don't respect that are people you don't want to associate with. What happens in High School or College when some guy starts forcing far more than a hug on her and she's too embarrassed to tell anyone?
