Jun. 29th, 2007 08:24 pmit's good to know the Music Establishment is just as stupid in the UK as they are here.
The eagerly awaited new album by Prince is being launched as a free CD with a national Sunday newspaper in a move that has drawn widespread criticism from music retailers...The Mail on Sunday revealed yesterday that the 10-track Planet Earth CD will be available with an "imminent" edition, making it the first place in the world to get the album. Planet Earth will go on sale on July 24.
and the whiners say:
The Entertainment Retailers Association said the giveaway "beggars belief". "It would be an insult to all those record stores who have supported Prince throughout his career," ERA co-chairman Paul Quirk told a music conference. "It would be yet another example of the damaging covermount culture which is destroying any perception of value around recorded music.
riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.
"The Artist Formerly Known as Prince should know that with behaviour like this he will soon be the Artist Formerly Available in Record Stores. And I say that to all the other artists who may be tempted to dally with the Mail on Sunday."
someone should clue that guy into the little known, closely guarded secret called teh internets. i hear tell it might be popular some day.

That's just my favorite line. All he needed to really make the threat sing, was to tell people that if they do "dally", they'll be sleeping with the fishes. Mmm, extortiontastic!
I hate that Prince's record company in the UK caved and separated themselves from the event. Pussies. How dare artists go around them! How dare artists think of something other than management's paycheck!
and it's such a smart move from Prince, too. Give people the album, and then when you tour, more people will show up, especially considering he's been kind of off the radar a bit lately. Of course, since that's the way artists actually make money, it'll cheese off the record companies because they don't get as big a cut as they do when they pay the artist 10ยข off a $20 CD.
Rock on, Prince! I've never, ever, ever been a fan, but if he's, in his head at least, telling these record stores to fuck off, he's my hero for the day.

Date: 2007-06-30 05:54 pm (UTC)huh? And here I was under the impression that record stores carried carried labels that made a profit for them. I was unaware that they were actually charities... /sarcasm
