DW finale - wherein i kinda rant a bit...and maybe swear some

- enjoyed the Master. enjoyed the Master and the Doctor relationship. loved the idea of Martha being a macguffin. loved using the Master's own tools against him. LOVED that the not!toclafane were the humans from Utopia. adoooooored Martha!Mum getting over her Doctorh8 and the idea that they all quietly, sekritly plotted and schemed.

- that said, the "think about the Doctor all at the same time and he will magically not!regenerate" part was fairly lame. i mean, unless this was a long lost episode of Peter Pan or something.

- also deeply lame was Rusty's apparent sudden forgetting that the Grandfather Paradox isn't. the show's entire premise is built on quantum realities, and how they're all separate in space-time, you know, like quantum mechanics actually is, and now suddenly he doesn't remember that anymore and makes a paradox plot? wtf for? he didn't need it to have the not!toclafane come back and kill some humans. it was all just a lame - there's that word again - set up to get time to go backwards and undo the Voyager Episode last year. jeebus fuck, Rusty, your characters have fucking time machines for fuck's sake, you couldn't come up with something better? [and i'm not even going to THINK about why time went backwards, one year EXACTLY, when the Toy That Saxon Built go boom. this is me sticking my fingers in my ears singing la la la la la la la.]

- and very nearly tying for first in the deepest of the deeply, deeply lame is Martha going into the TARDIS, the second time, to essentially punish the Doctor for not being in love with her. how the fuck is that his fault? i love Martha. i rilly, rilly, rilly, RILLY love Martha, but that was totally obnoxious, and i may possibly be the most pissed about that.

- but the most DEEPEST of the deeply, deeply lame?

and THE DOCTOR DIDN'T GET THE REFERENCE UNTIL MARTHA POINTED IT OUT TO HIM???????? riiiiiight.

what a complete and utter waste of something potentially fantastic. and Jack lives so long he TURNS INTO A GIANT ALIEN HEAD IN A JAR JUST FOR FUCKING CUZ????????

if he can't fucking die, he can't fucking die. and if his body heals itself, which, you know, is HOW HE CAN'T FUCKING DIE, then he's not going to age because aging is cells not regenerating. gawd, that was sloppy.


i didn't hate the ep, and there was much about it that was awesome and fun, but the stuff i got issues with throws this ep in the bin where i store the VoyagerEpisodeThatDoesntExist and the GalacticaEpisodeThatDoesntExist.

i hate it when they blow perfectly excellent acting. ah, well, nobody's perfect. better luck next season, mates.

i'll be over in my happy place where Jack's a proto-Time Lord, if anyone's looking for me.

I didn't take Martha's actions as punishment-- more like her coming clean and moving on, if that makes sense. I'm glad she told him how she felt. Now I want her and Milligan to get together and make beautiful children ;)

The TARDIS did just spend probably 2 years or so very, very sick, so maybe her defenses were down. That's how I'm handwaving it, at any rate.

i can't handwave. it's a frakking cruise ship and i'm supposed to buy that the TARDIS, an iiitttttyy bitty PHONE BOOTH can get hit by a cruise ship? for seriously? and the BOW OF A CRUISE SHIP is going to pierce a hole IN THE SIDE OF A PHONE BOOTH????? the ship's anchor is bigger than the TARDIS, for frak's sake; if anything, the TARDIS would bounce off on the very nearly impossible chance that they'd be close enough to run into each other.

it takes a LOT for me to be unable to handwave, but when you manage to hit the trigger, boy are you screwed.

I did a lot of suspending, so I mostly enjoyed it. But, I agree the Face of Boe thing is kinda weird. My initial problem was that I didn't see how him going to the big bright city from BFE made them call him the Face of Boe. eh? Why would they do that? Most BFE would call him the kid who did well, that jerk who thought he was too good for us, stuff like that.

I have to agree that I actually thought Martha was just explaining at the end. ITA that it's not the Doctor's fault he doesn't love her.

RTD says on M-W there will be big news. Some about Martha.

ITA about the breaching the ship. WTF? Better be a good reason for it.

I didn't read the scene the way you did, but I am still amused at the fan reaction. He didn't care (read: sob out loud) as much about Martha leaving to pursue her own life as he did losing the last member of his species! Bad Time Lord. No cookie!

Over-identify much?

(I like my Time Lords remote rather than emotionally available, personally. Makes the alienness of him easier to buy. Human normativity applied to Time Lords? Bound to run into ontological trouble. Also, I empathize more readily with the one having to deal with the unwanted attention, than with the one giving it; it sucks on the flip side, too.)

That said, the episode didn't grab me until the final minutes. Too much exposition. Vivement Noel.

i thought that part was spot on, actually; that he'd obviously care more about losing the Master because, d'uh, the only other Time Lord. oi.

i think what bugged about the Martha bit was it was the last straw after i was already so very irked.

i like that she was smart enough to leave rather than keep being disappointed because he didn't heart her back. it just felt intentionally hurtful to me that she told him. she needed him to know that she loved him and because he didn't love her she was leaving, and that played to me as a way to make him hurt, even if it was just a little.

and maybe it felt that way because she was on about it all season. the first few eps it felt right, because the hurt was still new and fresh, and you're still used to the person being there that isn't any more; like your memories have "muscle" memory, just like your body does. and it felt right in Utopia as well because that's Jack's first contact with the Doctor since the season one finale, the first time that they get to mourn the loss of her together.

the rest of the time, though, was - and totally in retrospect because it wasn't strong enough to bug at the time - kinda childish and self-absorbed.

maybe i'm just bitter cuz it put a dent in my Martha!love, and my Martha!love was otherwise pure and shiny.

to a degree, yes, this. i don't like them totally distant, but yeah they aren't us, and they aren't, i dunno, normal. they carry the whole of space and time within them and perspective is everything. it's almost like his deep love of humans is a personality quirk, an eccentricity if you will, a teacher's joy at a particularly apt student or something. ::::stretching for metaphors::: he keeps people at a distance because he has to.
