and you just thought the guy looked cool on a tshirt.

In November 1962, the FBI uncovered a terrorist plot - the targets were Macy's, Gimbels, Bloomingdale's and Grand Central Terminal. Five hundred kilos of TNT were slated to go off in those places the day after Thanksgiving, the busiest shopping day of the year. When the FBI cracked the plot, they discovered that the people involved were with the Cuban mission to the United Nations working in cahoots with the New York chapter of the Fair Play for Cuba Committee. Can you imagine the carnage? It would have made 9/11 look pretty tame. And that case was reported in the New York Times, November 27, 1962.

There was another plot, in 1964, when Che Guevara was actually visiting New York. He was fine-tuning a plot put into place by some black radicals, a group that considered the Black Panthers to be Uncle Toms. They had visited Cuba and had met with Che, and in 1964, he was meeting with them in New York. They were fine-tuning plans to blow up the Statue of Liberty and the Washington Monument, among other landmarks.

I didn't know all that stuff. I never thought he was a "cool, revolutionary guy"; I knew vaguely he was involved in something "bad" in Cuba and South America. But I never knew any of that bombing planning shit. I wonder why they didn't tell us before?

the info's available, and it was reported at the time, but like the article discusses, for some bizarre reason this guy was always considered a darling so if you didn't know already, you really had to go looking for it. i've *never* understood how people can ignore the fact that the man was a butcher and portray him as someone to emulate...or at the very least, slap on the side of handbag. grrrrrrrrrr.

being from immigrant parents that were both refugees, i think had a lot to do with my brother and i knowing who all the bad guys really were at the time. it also helped that one of the kids in my elementary school, came to the school in 5th or 6th grade as i recall, was a refugee from Cuba. Castro finally let the family leave but made them leave everything they owned behind....money, land, any assets at all. they came with a few suitcases and that's it. made a HUGE impression on me.
