One major non-controversy was the question of Flight 77’s alleged strike on the Pentagon. Every speaker who addressed this issue evinced extreme skepticism toward the government’s story, and suggested that the preponderance of evidence shows that no 757—and certainly not Flight 77 piloted by the ultra-incompetent Hani Hanjour—could have struck the Pentagon.

k, wait. people actually believe that Flight 77 didn't crash into the Pentagon? like, for reals? that's...wow.

omg, when i worked at tvg, NO ONE there believed that 9/11 actually happened! except for me and my buddy bob. they all passed that fake video around of the plane and how it couldn't have crashed into the pentagon and how bush shot it down, etc. he can do that you know, he has the power. /sarcasm

that place made me politically insane.

You'd be surprised how appealing a conspiracy theory is, even among those who are not certifiably nuts. It provides a sense of order to events, creates an overarching, all-controlling villain (rather than many smaller, and maybe less with-it villains), and inspires the sensation in its believers that they have Secret and Superior Knowledge.

Lots of people are into wacky conspiracy theories: some halfway plausible, some completely out-there. I could rattle off ten or fifteen popular ones for you, some of them obviously political (lefty/righty), some religious, some social, some just plain weird.

(And for some reason, plane disasters of every stripe seem especially prone to being conspiracy-theoried about.)

yeah, me and the roomie were talking about that. my brain officially can't wrap itself around something like that. i mean, i get something like the JFK assassination, that totally lends itself to conspiracy theories but something like this just boggles.

Oh, I heard the Pentagon was hit by a rocket, not a plane. And how about those people who still think the moon walks were done in Hollywood. Imagine all the people involved who had to keep quiet?

Or maybe they were all killed.....

I heard that the other day! Apparently there's an underground documentary circulating that posits 9/11 was a Pearl Harbor/Remember the Maine style conspiracy: we let it happen so that we'd have an excuse to go to war. And the Pentagon was a bomb or a rocket or something, not a plane. Craaaaaaazy.

see, and I always respond to con-theorists by saying "well if you think that one's bad, just imagine all the stuff you know nothing about..."

it usually takes a moment to process through their litlle-poity heads, and then they blanche as their worst fears become founded... and then I casually mention that once conspirators know who you are, you must be discredited if not brainwashed... "you know I've heard tin-foil helps with that..."

and all that just a light hearted way of dealing with people who have never met 9/11 survivors, or known anyone who lost all of their office mates at the pentagon or WTC... because the only other response is physical...

"you want conspiracy? the minder 'bots don't just have you in a pod of gelatinous goo, hooked up to sensory input... they are carnivorous, and eventually you brain will be quite the delicacy..."
