autohagiographical

So sometime about the end of last century hagiography broadened its sense to that of any biographical work that flatters or idolises its subject.

I had to look it up and darn hard it was to track it down, too.

I'm sorry, but I can't leave comments on the article; I don't think I've ever seen a movie about Communists, not even Reds (wasn't that the one with Warren Beatty). I love Start The Revolution Without Me, but it deals with the French Revolution.....LOL

I don't think I've ever seen a movie about Communists,

the article's point exactly.

remember that Andy Garcia movie i keep talking about, The Lost City? know why it couldn't get major distribution? because it's anti Castro and anti Guevara, and because it makes a lie out of what Hollywood believes about itself.

Would the general public go to movies about Communists? They sound like art house movies.

everything depends on how you tell the story. if it's advertised as "HEY! A FILM ABOUT COMMUNISTS! probably not. but if, like all of the best films, it's advertised as a film about people, a struggle against odds, etc, then sure, why not.

at first I was all excited about a movie I hadn't heard of... too bad it's not true. I had other thoughts, but eh, they don't mean much. but this is why history is difficult, especially modern history. it's an amalgamation of events, and that leads to an frame of what was going on at the time. the big however has always been do you know everything there is to know? Until the actual fall of communism, and the unsealing of the soviet records, there was no way to know if all the information and understandings about communism in the US were actually true, or were the selective understanding of paranoia. Now that it is clear that many things about communism in the US were influenced by the USSR... the history will need revising. it will be years before that will take place though. Probably until all the professors in our generation are dead. by that time, the distance from the action will allow detached thought and reasoning about the subjects, because it will just be information.

I don't think that will change the movies that get made though, even then. communism has never been interesting enough, because it is called that. If someday they start calling it totalitarianism, as practiced by Stalin [and other] well that's different. It'll just take time...

i was bummed too. i thought FINALLY....and then, no. /pouts

what's interesting is that the studios were right in their outrage - who cares what political party anyone was, that's wrong on the govt's part - but because the politicians got what was happening backwards, the propagandists got to keep doing their job and Hollywood got to wear a badge of honor.

the MSM won't cover shit like this because it messes with their world view and so the average joe, including the average joe in Hollywood, doesn't know that there really *were* communists manipulating events in Hollywood and using it for propaganda, but not by what go made, but rather by what *didn't* get made.

So Viacom took a video that I had made for non-profit purposes and without trying to acquire my permission, used it in a for-profit broadcast. And then when I made a YouTube clip of what they did with my material, they charged me with copyright infringement and had YouTube pull the clip.

That is SOOOOO F'ed up.
