eta: and you know what? you can take Hillary and her nanny state with you.
sorry, but you don't get to force those kinds of choices down the public's throat. and don't get me wrong, i think it's awesome that health care is such a priority for Hillary, whether it's simply politically expedient for her to take that stance or she actually believes in it, but it's not Government's job to force people to participate. it is in their interests to ensure that it's available, yes, but those two concepts are not in any way the same.

Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton said Tuesday that a mandate requiring every American to purchase health insurance was the only way to achieve universal health care but she rejected the notion of punitive measures to force individuals into the health care system...
...She said she could envision a day when "you have to show proof to your employer that you're insured as a part of the job interview — like when your kid goes to school and has to show proof of vaccination," but said such details would be worked out through negotiations with Congress.

Date: 2007-09-20 03:32 am (UTC)the federal government, and not thru willful negligence i firmly believe, already can't handle the programs they're responsible for - social security and medicare/medical i'm lookin' at you - so why would ANYBODY in their right mind think they could handle Universal Health Care?

Date: 2007-09-20 08:04 am (UTC)I think my favorite recent analogy was comparing universal healthcare to the DMV. That, and somebody saying if healthcare is a "right" then isn't food a "right". And if food is a "right" then shouldn't everybody get the same kind of food.
and if universal healthcare is so good, then why did a Canadian MP come to California for breast cancer surgery?

Date: 2007-09-20 06:44 pm (UTC)yes, it's important. yes, we need to try and find a solution. no, this isn't the way to do it.

Date: 2007-09-20 12:47 pm (UTC)it doesn't cost hilly anything to say this stuff. she knows how well personally the government is ready to do any of this. She can talk a good game to pander to everyone who believes a rich country should be able to afford this, all the while knowing herself that it isn't that easy...
It's going to be an even harder sell when France's system implodes, since they are often held as some sort of model. Healthcare is just ONE facet, and when the govt is stretched, something has to give...
so when healthcare is required... will health be required? It's a bad return on investment, elsewise. If health is required, d'ya think they will be able to mandate that the individual do certain things?
All in all, it's just a nother brick in the wall...

Sounds good in those sound bites for a campaign. But question is always, "And how are you going to do that?"

yes, and that's precisely why this is a horrific approach.
