Jun. 14th, 2008 05:01 pmhello flist! :::waves:::
what fannish things have we all been up to?
eta: me, i've watched the latest DW....and *finally* watched the two-part series 2 finale of Torchwood. as
themonkeycabal so eloquently just put it, it's amazing how small the difference really is between genius and missing it by a mile.
no spoilers revealed but it's not the TW two-parter wasn't rilly, RILLY entertaining - with some tremendous character moments - but bloody hell, people....>< this much logic and >< dialogue and it woulda been outta the ballpark.
*sigh*
at least it's not 'seriously? Hollywood's gone and made Zombie-Horses-Attack-A-Post-Civil-War-Town?' horrific. [review of Shamalyngdong's latest so-called film with HUGE SPOILERS IN IT at the link.] if you don't mind being spoiled, though, the review is SOOOOOO worth the read. it's really damned funny.
"Zombie-Horses", btw, is [not what it was really called] a spec script i had to read for an internship....and yes, the town really was plagued by zombie horses. i can't make this shit up. the *only* good thing is that me and the roomie have had a fantastic source of joke fodder for several years because of it. sterling dialogue bits like "You are tall. You are a real cowgirl." /pinkyswear
i've decided that the mystery of the Universe isn't "how did it calculate 42?" no, no...the REAL mystery is who the bloody hell keeps giving that man MONEY TO MAKE MORE MOVIES????????? seriously, why?
maybe he thought the plot would be as logical as aliens, who find water literally acting as acid to their persons, and thus deeply deadly, deciding anyway to invade a planet that's 70 fucking percent water. it boggles.

Date: 2008-06-15 07:56 am (UTC)The io9 review of The Happening was also fucking hilarious.
I think Newitz is dead wrong even *attempting* to evaluate it by SFnal standards, though. SF isn't about provoking fear of the unknown to compel people to conform to a the storyteller's preferred moral standard-- that's the turf of Every Horror Movie and Ghost Story Ever. "If you go outside of the village, if you breach the social contract, you will suffer heinously for your transgressions."
