Mississippi, FEMA and you.

let's see how much attention the press gives this story. none, i'm sure, since it's something the government, or a government agency, is doing right.

this, otoh, should be getting much, much more attention, and perhaps yelling from highest mountain tops. may i suggest to travelers to fedex your portable devices ahead of you.

good grief.

i love a comment the Electronic Frontier guy made about this essentially being industrial espionage. they'd be hard-pressed to argue the guy wrong - taking the article as facts at face value, of course.

better, though, and by better i mean oh ffs, was the [paraphrased], but, but, there could be intellectual copyright violations on those drives!!! yeah, and? like i used to tell my cops who would argue with me about how clearly they should have to argue probable cause against a "hunch", however accurate...sorry, buddy, but if you think you've got a crime then do your job and make a fucking case, complete with evidence, or have a coke and a smile and stfu.

OMG!! Exactly. If they think we have copyrighted material, then get a fucking whatever legal thing you need to get it. It is not related to terrorism.

well, and even if it were, the random nature of it still falls, imho, fully under illegal search and seizure.

if they think they have a case, then make it...go get a warrant and *then* seize stuff...but don't do something so boneheaded on an operational day-to-day basis which totally undermines your validity and moral high ground. argh.
