Jul. 3rd, 2008 11:14 amViacom gets its way in court; Google forced to cough up FULL USER INFO for anyone that's EVER watched a vid at YouTube.
click thru to the more info, which is an article at EFF about this utterly fucktastic ruling by the federal court in the Southern District of New York.
emphasis mine.

In any event, the court ordered production of not just IP addresses, but also all the associated information in the Logging database. Whatever might be said about 'an IP address without additional information,' the AOL search history leak fiasco shows that the material viewed by a user alone can be sufficient to identify the user, even with neither a login nor an IP address.

Date: 2008-07-03 09:00 pm (UTC)why would viacom need to know what USER had watched? If they want infringement, all they need to know is that some user did, and that would constitute display I guess... Unless they PLAN on going after an unsuspecting person who watches a vid on youtube for copyright violation.
At which point every AMV on youtube would have to go away, because they all have clips... in addition to all the anime and fansubs I have watched that aren't available in the US anyway...
bleaugh...
