you know you're gonna have a bad day when you walk in and your editor needs to see you before you even get a chance to sit down, and then he grabs his boss as we walk into the edit bay, and then he says to close the door.

and then he tells you that everything on the edit storage is gone.

and by gone, he means gone.

and then you have to call your boss. and then he has to call his boss.

good times.

thankfully, not the final cut projects because they're stored in a different segment, but we're missing TONS of stuff, and editorial's gonna have to reconnect all the audio by hand...clip.by.clip.

and we'll have to re-publish about half our total data...camera.by.camera.

Fortunately, Mad Dog still has the publication firehose script I wrote lo those many moons ago, so *getting* it all into the pipe won't be so bad... but then it's the render times.

ew. sorry to hear it kid. not backed up/disaster recovery? If not, this is a great time to turn the screws on the bosses to make it happen. Nobody ever wants to pay for redundancy until it's too late. IT usually does a root cause analysis, gets a price tag based off of man-hours lost and what cannot be recovered, and presents that to the big bosses. Magically money seems to appear from somewhere. You can also point out that coming up with a recovery plan and making it work shows the best quality of managers... appeal to their vanity in other words. The fact that they have known for years that it needed to be done is immeterial to anyone but you, you know how that goes... :massive.eyeroll:

oh we had backups. and we did a restore from tape. the downside is it only restored about 80% of the data and we don't know why. and of course we're missing all the stage data. *head desk*

the Geeks have a solid plan of action, and it happily doesn't impact our animation files so the artists are cooking away, but it's going to be a lot of work.

the upside? now we know the restore has a bug...and this didn't happen 4 months ago when we were up against REALLY ugly deadlines.
