was lucky enough to catch Star Trek last night at the Cinerama Dome. i only have two comments for now.

1. JJ knocked it out of the ballpark. it.is.stellar.

2. somewhere that rackfucksonofabitchthatnearlydestroyedthefranchise Brannon Braga is catatonic under a desk knowing that the franchise has been reborn, he had utterly nothing to do with it, and all those billions will be going to someone else.

that? makes me very happy.

Can't wait to see it!

I was unsure all along, but even if it sucked (which no one says it does)(except maybe that voice coming from under that desk), reason number 2 is reason enough to go.

I haven't been this Trek-pleased since they finally killed Shatner Kirk.

Maybe I'll talk my boss into us abandoning the children leaving the teenager in charge for one night and going to see it together.

(I'm apparently struck-stuck today)

I told Tim we had to try and find your name in the credits. He spotted it first, we cheered your name and clapped.

heh, as a group of Scapers [my mothly meetup group] and die hard Trek people, we gushed a lot. Especially on the homage working even if you had never seen any Trek ever. and THAT is sayin' something.

I haven't seen it yet, and am still ambivalent about doing so, but I have a question that can hopefully be answered in a non-spoilery way.

One of the problems I've had with the apparent concept of the movie (gleaned from the few promos I've seen) is that they seem to ignore the age differences between members of the bridge crew. Chekov, in particular, was fresh out of the Academy in the original series while Kirk was in his mid-30's, so shouldn't Chekov still be in high school, or at most in the Academy, during this time frame? And the other junior officers like Sulu and Uhura also struck me as somewhat younger than the senior crew like Spock, McCoy, and Scott.

So, is this actually ignored as it seems, or are there actually age differences that aren't obvious from the promos?

Okay, I just went and read a synopsis of this movie, a bit more complete than what I'd seen before. I now have no interest whatsoever in seeing it, since apparently they destroy things that were later seen in the original series. And there is no mention of UN-destroying them (though given the premise of the story, I suppose it's possible it was done).

dunno kiddo, in the context of the Star Trek Universe this is inherently canon, and I think you really should have seen it rather than reading a synopsis - but? To each their own... ;)

If you want to discuss finer points NOT HERE, shoot me a message...

Having now gotten to sleep on this, I think it may have just been the shock that was talking. I had read almost NOTHING about the movie before yesterday, so I'd had no idea about anything. I was thinking it was a straight prequel to the original series.

Having read through comments here and on other LJs, I now think I may eventually be able to go see this. I'm actually glad I read the synopsis, though, because facing the shock in the theater might not have been helpful to my enjoyment of the movie.

Paramount is rebooting the franchise, and the only way to viably do that is to start over and give themselves room to story-tell. To restrict themselves to what is already canon is, imho, NOT storytelling; it's story-re-treading, and I see no point in such a venture. Those stories already exist. I personally want new ones with the characters that I already love.

I thought they did an utterly tremendous job. I'm deeply, deeply in love with the Star Trek universe all over again. I love these characters. JJ kept the spirit of the original series fully in tact, and made some fantastic homages that both simultaneously kept to and changed canon.

If you're interest is in taking a leap of faith and following new stories then this film is for you. Again imho, the essentials of all the characters are there; they really, really are. If, however, your interest is in preserving the original in a pristine, still wrapped in its box form, then this film is most definitely *not* for you.

the new film is not only an achievement of revitalizing the Star Trek franchise, but it's an achievement in film all by itself. this film, just as a film, rocks. as I told a cinematographer friend of mine, the sound design alone is worth the price of admission.

Just got back from seeing it and OMG I loved it! It was gorgeous and well acted and well paced and just, yeah. I may be wary of Abrams when it comes to getting attached to his TV shows, but he made a damn fine movie. Good show, man, good show.

right?

now that i have a more professionally developed eye for dfx/vfx, i'm also deeply in love with the movie from a technical standpoint. you feel this world; the fx make the world tangible, and the amount of set dec that was done to camera and not digitally kicked major ass. me and spook are pretty sure that they shot engine room scenes in an actual brewery, though we can't confirm that yet. :D

JJ really nailed it.
