So rewriting the civil law to redefine "marriage" as only between two people of opposing genders (and oh, what about the transgendered! That'll be fun for them!), really means encoding in the secular law the preferences of a particular religious viewpoint. In sum, establishing religion. Which Congress is expressly forbidden to do, under the First Amendment.
