and his whole argument is utterly stupid. the government's job is to act on its citizens behalf, and presumably in a manner that its citizens agree with. if private citizens and private corporations are donating gazillions of their own dollars, presumably it's because they feel it's the right thing to do. if they're doing it on their own, why would anyone translate that to they don't want the government to do the same thing? the government's job is to speak for the nation as a whole. if the citizens are donating on their own, why wouldn't they want the nation to do the same thing?
You know, one of my best friends is a hardcore libertarian, and I'd make the mistake of getting into political discussions with him (he always knows more about politics than me which is why it's a mistake) and would say stuff like that. I'd just be left with my mouth open.
Now lots of things I do argee on that he would ramble on about, but not that.I just don't see any problem with the government lending aid, people are more important than an arguement based solely on principle. And as you said, when many people are giving to private organisations, than it probably is the will of the people. Or hey, people may not be able to give and are glad money they have already paid in taxes are going to people who desperately need it.
