Apr. 7th, 2006 05:02 pmstill sick. not in a gawdiwishiwasdying kind of way anymore, but still energy drained. the front lawn, after the torrential rain and no small amount of sun, is trying to take over the street and i haven't the energy to go mow. it's buggin me actually, but it must wait for tomorrow. so, now i'm bored and picked up some more Brit tv. the next set of Touching Evil and a 6 pack of The Avengers. the latter has 2 eps with Mrs Gale, two with Emma Peel, and two with Tara King. they're all handpicked by McNee as his favorites.
we're watching the first one now, Mr Teddy Bear, [the season premiere for season 2] aired originally in 1962 and it's brilliant. and i mean that by modern standards. the dialogue is so, so, so slick, the delivery wicked and natural, and the cinematography is sharp and very stylized. there's one particular shot of Mrs Gale going into a creepy house and it's shot from an insanely long lens from the top, or maybe the landing, of the stairs. makes her look so far away and gives this creepy claustrophobic feel to the location.
the opening sequence shows a guy dying on television during an interview. he was poisoned. they found a clock mechanism in the dead man's stomach, and it was housed in a pill. the mechanism triggered just like a watch and at the precise time it split in half, releasing cyanide. that is brilliant. it's stunning for then, but it's still brilliant now. no worry about being anywhere near the victim.
and Steed is such an unrepenting bastard, it's awesome. and very daring for its time. :::luffs:::
i miss this show.
