courtesy of the lovely [livejournal.com profile] simplystars, we're watching the original Logan's Run on dvd. /geek

creepy, creepy film. some of the special effects are still really cool and some don't survive, but man, it's a creeptastic story. and it's excellent proof of just how truly watershed the original Star Wars was, out just one year later.

apparently i have username typos. huh.

the opening Run sequence is so...malicious. Logan and Francis just completely toy with the poor bastard, in perfect, and again creepy, counterpoint to the Carousel in progress at the same time.

poor Francis. he's goes utterly, psychotically mad, his world totally destroyed when Logan runs.

they believe so *fully* in their world, that Renewal is real, that their way is best, that children don't need parents to raise them, that the balance, one born for every one that dies, is right. and even in the face of proof that the system is a lie, Logan still needs to believe or his entire life has been meaningless, and he's been a murderer.

and in the humor category, there's Farrah. "Oh yes. Holly would like dark hair." i never saw this film in the theater. it was always bootleg copies or film shown at cons in high school. every single one of them, when the wall falls on Farrah, the audience cheers. rather enthusiastically. even in the late 70's they were tired of her. poor girl.

hey, the Love Shop!!!! heh. forgot about that. i can't get away from the naked peopllllllllle!!! ahhhhhhhh! imagine what Jeff could do in the Love Shop. his poor little brain would explode. heh. spook needs to write a nightmare!fic where the Coupling gang gets stuck in the City on Last Day. :::looks nervously across the room:::

BOX!!!! amazing, batshit robot!!! YES!!!! "Fish. And plankton. And seagreens, and protein from the sea. And then it stopped coming, and they came instead. *shiver* that whole sequence had such a Soylent Green feel to it, even thought that wasn't what's going on. there's nothin' better than crazy robots.

except maybe Crazy!PeterUstinov cheerfully mumbling about jellicle cats.

awwwww, poor broken Francis. even at the end he insists on believing that Logan renewed and his world wasn't a lie.

aaaaaand the end. smiley happy people and one old man, city all 'splodey in the backround. good times. 'hey, we're free. uh, dude? you blew the city up and uhm, no food? whatever, man, we're free and i've got a girl, yo.' heh.

i'm hoping, if the new Logan's Run project gets made that it'll be enough push to re-issue the original and get it digitally re-mastered for effects and sound.

imdb has the storyline shift from 30 years down to 21. i think that's a mistake story-wise. 21 isn't old enough, i don't think, to be concerned about mortality, children, stuff like that. you're still essentially a kid. hope that changes.
