huh.

until i switched from ExpectingRobinofSherwood mode to OhHeyThisIsRobinHoodPrinceOfThieves mode i was underwhelmed.

it was very entertaining but there was no ZOMGLUFFS!!!! there seems to be much drooling over Gisbourne, which, yes, he's droolworthy, but Robin had an appeal as well. i can't put a finger on it yet, though. Marion's character stopped being vaguely annoying at the hanging and it, more than the scene with her dad, Robin and Much, did wonders at showing the writers really did have context for her behavior.

Joe Armstrong looks so much like his father it was vaguely creeping me out. also? he amuses.

i like the changed backstories they've given to Much, Marion and Will. Marion is still the daughter of a nobleman but now he was the former sheriff. Much is no longer the Miller's son and i like that Robin had given him his freedom, and that Much is no longer "simple" but is still kinda clueless. and i like that Will is so much younger than any incarnations i've seen/read about. it lends an authenticity, i think, because it would have been the young(ish) sons that would go out hunting to try and feed their families. and really, i'm kind of ruined for an Adult! Will because of Ray Winstone's brilliance in Robin of Sherwood, so the age helps me restart the character.

i also like that they seem to have kept the RobinUsedToBeASpoiledBitch backstory for Robin that was prominent in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. it suits. and i also like the implication that Guy and Robin used to raise hell together, or at least together separately, with that little exchange where Guy had said he'd seen Robin fight, and when Robin asked where, Gisbourne said he couldn't recall.

i think the show, to be a "hit" to me, needs to find its balance between the two principle screened versions. and it felt like they were trying to in the pilot. haven't *quite* got it yet, but the last half hour was considerably closer than the first.

they could quit having their Sheriff try to channel Alan Rickman's, though. that wouldn't suck.

to any UK fans, though, if you could tell the BBC that the location cards as shooting arrows is REALLY annoying, i'd be forever grateful. and the chick makeup. stepping away from that a bit would be groovy. cheers.

cautious optimism. entertained. has potential to wow. jury still out.
