[livejournal.com profile] themonkeycabal turned me on to Idlewild. pretty sure "Warning Promises" isn't their freshman album but i'm not positive. they sound kinda like the Shins if they were channeling REM, by way of, i dunno, Morrissey. very groovy.

and then, having met [livejournal.com profile] thevaliumsofa for an early birthday dinner tonight - (after a loverly day at the Malibu Getty with the roomie, extra special trippy on accounta there wasn't a day and a half of sleep deprivation that usually involves one our trips to a museum) - J was silly kind enough to loan us her new Black Rebel Motorcycle Club disc. i didn't even know they had an album newer than "Howl". Hoo-lee frak, dude. 0_0 "Baby 81" is open highway, roadhouse, honest to God rock'n'roll. it should be gracing the ears of the Metallicar, especially with a track called "666 Conducer". [you hear that Kripke?]

Track 4 on the cd, "Windows", is so eerily reminiscent of later Beatles that it could literally be a lost George Harrison song written for "Sgt Pepper's"...if they dumped the scimtar and added Stevie Ray Vaughn on guitar. the music supervisor for La Femme Nikita recommended the band as what he couldn't stop listening to at the time, and with every album i keep getting even more impressed because they just get better.

every album also seems to have a song that's very nearly gospel, so hypnotic is some aspect of the melody, usually the intro. "Baby 81" is no exception with "All You Do Is Talk"...they give up something slow building and deep, something almost Joshua Tree in its structure. guess that's why "Baby 81" has taken Billboard by storm.

and now i have much fatigueness. there was antiquities, and laughter and silliness with good friends, and utterly divine cow, and apple walnut cinnamon cobbler thingy, and the season finale of Heroes, and a new ep of Doctor Who, and new musics, and figuring out how to transfer stuff from my iTunes to SpotTheExternalHardDrive [shut up, i only got an iPod this december!], and, and, and and...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
