The impression I got, from his interactions with the President and others, is that he copes just fine so long as he doesn't have to interact with his father. Or think about interacting with his father. Or be on the same ship.

with the President, he doesn't have any back issues so his everyday coping skills work just fine. it's the complicated, complex emotions, conflicted stuff that he has problems with.
