Jerry Pournelle on tyranny and democracy.

i link to this - hat tip to Professor Reynolds - for two reasons; one fannish, and one not. the latter...i'll leave unarticulated here. parse it how you will. the former, however, is a fairly huge fuck you to Ron Moore.

you took a show that had some of the most tremendous storytelling potential in years and you drove it into the ground with your small-minded arrogance and bitterness....or maybe you don't believe what you wrote - which, really, is worse imho - and you're just an intentionally pretentious, pedantic git. whichever. but lemme give you a tip that you'll never, ever read....

democracy's messy, buddy. sorry, but it just is. and you don't abandon it because zomg, it's so haaaaaaarrrrrrrd, and maybe you don't always get your way; this isn't the sandbox and we're not in kindergarten.

likewise to technology and religion. people are complicated, and messy, and childish, and flawed, and vengeful, and suffer from bad judgement, and are beautiful, and elegant, capable of tremendous grace and pathos, compassion and generosity.

we are what we are.

you want to give up on humanity and call it edgy writing, Ron? knock yourself out. only, maybe next time? go write for some hack channel in another galaxy and spare us all, k? asshat.

as far as i'm concerned, most of Season 3, along with 99.999999987665% of Season 4, have been relegated to the "never, EVER occurred" bin, tucked in nice and neat alongside those so-called Star Wars prequels that don't exist either. *nods*
