every time i think i can't be caught unawares of the beauty and excellence that is Serenity, i watch it again and my breath catches all over.

and there's my deep, deep love of what i consider to be Whedon's two overriding themes throughout; that government should not insert itself into the lives of its citizens - no matter how good its intentions - and that humanity is brilliant all by its messy, complicated, error-prone self and please to not be trying to change it for its own good.

yup and yup. I can hardly wait until we can start mining the asteroid belt and allow people to move it off this blue marble. IMHO without frontiers we eat ourselves like a cancer within. The important part though, is that it has to PAY. sure there are place on the earth to explore, but they don't pay, they are for scientific curiosity. Mining and trade have always paid, even if they are dangerous. They pull out the people who can't live in the narrow framework. As much as I like aliens, I thinks the Joss vision is a bit closer to potential reality.

his vision certainly feels realistic in terms how rough and tumble it would likely be on the outer planets/early exploration. and how BIG space is, that they expanded so very much and still it's only them.
