magic wasn't an evil enough message, now it's the alcohol.

to which i can only reply, fuck off and stop lecturing people on how to live their lives, and raise their kids. because, you know, the last time you guys gave it a go, it worked.so.well.

from the comments:

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. Alcohol and drinking are facts in life, and will not be wished away. Alcohol was not shown in the movie to be entirely good: It made Hermione behave a little foolishly and Hagrid look really foolish. Whose idea was it to pass laws about drinking, anyway? What did the world do before the age limits? Why assume that such laws are universal and universally needed, or even helpful? And if a certain number of people drink too much and make a mess of things, why is that my problem? I should not let my children see the movie so that they or some other person won’t drink too much? We should censor movies to present only wholesome images, especially in childrens’ movies? A substantial number of people in the West have drinking problems, so we should somehow control the message in movies about drinking? I don’t have a problem with drinking. And if one can comment on the drinking scenes, they are a mix of good and bad, edginess and relaxation, and in short, they provide no singular message. Personally, I started drinking beer when I was about 14 or so, with my parents’ permission. That was 50 years ago. People need to lighten up.

eta: and since it's of a theme, and the single, largest reason i oppose nationalising health care, i link to economist Megan McCardle's detailed post about why she opposes it as well. and the comments, though very, very long, are definitely worth a read as well. some great back and forth proper discussion and debate going on with very little asshattery.

The other major reason that I am against national health care is the increasing license it gives elites to wrap their claws around every aspect of everyone's life. Look at the uptick in stories on obesity in the context of health care reform. Fat people are a problem! They're killing themselves, and our budget! We must stop them! And what if people won't do it voluntarily? Because let's face it, so far, they won't. Making information, or fresh vegetables, available, hasn't worked--every intervention you can imagine on the voluntary front, and several involuntary ones, has already been tried either in supermarkets or public schools. Americans are getting fat because they're eating fattening foods, and not exercising. How far are we willing to go beyond calorie labelling on menus to get people to slim down?

the second largest reason i oppose nationalising health care is thus:
Once the government gets into the business of providing our health care, the government gets into the business of deciding whose life matters, and how much. It gets into the business of deciding what we "really" want, where what we really want can never be a second chocolate eclair that might make us a size fourteen and raise the cost of treating us.

and don't even try to tell me those conversations aren't already happening. [Torchwood: Children of Earth i'm looking at you. good science fiction is fiction at it's most subversive; using aliens and whatnot simply as a catalyst to examine society and its choices.]

and just for the record, i don't care whose administration is pimping this. i will oppose it. and i oppose it being one of the uninsured.

start with tort reform. start with fixing Social Security and Medicare. start with things that will manifestly, tangibly, prove that you mean reform and not nanny-state.

emphasis mine.

I have more issues with alcoholism than the average person due to personal crap. However, I have not seen anything wrong with the HP movies and books. At. All.

I think people forget that HP is British, a pub culture. Kids grow up with the pubs. Leaving the institution out of the story would actually see wrong to me, and probably to British fans.

I read stuff like this, and I wonder, "did they run out of real news to cover today?"

i grew up with an abusive, alcoholic dad. but i also grew up in an immigrant european family and alcohol with dinner was a norm. as kids, we drank alcohol cut with generous helpings of 7-Up, because if you make alcohol no.big.deal., and you demonstrate consuming it responsibly, guess what kids don't feel compelled to do because it is ooohhh, forbidden? oy.

I'm a fat person and yes, the comments about fat people costing more worry me. However, many other people are also fat so come and get us, big boys. We will sit on your chests until you holler "uncle!"
