Powerline's thoughts.
for me, the money quote is this - and something we seem to have long forgotten:
emphasis mine.
though, i do have to qualify my agreement with "currently". i think *currently*, it is a criticism that seems to only be applied to conservatives, and i hope that changes. not the 'only to conservatives' part, btw, but rather that we try to recall why there are different political parties in the first place, and that disagreeing with whomever has the talking stick at the moment does not, whatever the "side", make the dissenter somehow unpatriotic.
i am the loyal opposition. i disagree but i don't think those i disagree with are stupid, or traitors, or [insert insult here.] i simply philosophically disagree. and i don't believe that such disagreements are insurmountable; we simply need to remember to act like grown ups.

for me, the money quote is this - and something we seem to have long forgotten:
"The only answer is that "divisive" is a criticism that applies only to conservatives. It is not possible for a liberal to be "divisive," however crazed he or she may be. This is true even though the whole point of a political system is to decide issues about which people disagree. If people don't disagree, it isn't a political issue. So to argue for any political point of view is necessarily divisive."
