suelac has some really compelling (thoughts) on Gay Marriage and any attempts to outlaw same via constitutional amendment. do read it if you haven't. she covers the three existing amendments that are germaine to the issue. the point i find most interesting, and that i haven't seen made elsewhere, is this:

So rewriting the civil law to redefine "marriage" as only between two people of opposing genders (and oh, what about the transgendered! That'll be fun for them!), really means encoding in the secular law the preferences of a particular religious viewpoint. In sum, establishing religion.
